The SYC’s 6th Grade Team Season Culminates In A Hard Fought Finale

On March 2nd, SYC faced Burke in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL) 6th Grade Championship game at Luther Jackson Middle School.  This competition pitted an 14-1 SYC squad against a formidable 15-0 Burke team.  SYC were led by three FCYBL All-League players, Sarah Chawki, Genesis Schneeberg, and Nina Velandria.  Great team defense kept the Burke’s FCYBL League Most Valuable Player(MVP), Josie Clayton in check most of the game, but Clayton made plays at critical moments to put her team up by 5 with 1:20 left in the game.  SYC’s LaLa Jones closed the gap to three points on a beautiful jumper at the 33 seconds mark, giving SYC two chances to tie the game with a three point play on inbound plays.  Unfortunately, SYC was unable to convert with the final score of 30-27.  The SYC 6th Grade Select team is composed of eight members of the MachinePro 2025 National Team who fought valiantly with their teammates to win another SYC championship.  Several members of the MachinePro 2025 National Team won the FCYBL 5th grade championship during the 2016-2017 season as 4th graders.  The SYC 6th Grade Select team is coached by MachinePro Coach Maurice Duckett.
